How to Change Cell Background Color in Google Sheets

Let’s see how to do this. In this instance, I’m using Windows 11 PC, Google Pixel 4a (Android 12), and iPhone (iOS 15.3).

PC

Here are the steps:

Sign in to Google Sheets.

Open the spreadsheet you want.

Select the cell(s) for which you want to change the background color.

Now you need to find the Fill color icon at the top. You can find this one between Text color and Borders.

Hit it and pick the color you want.

That’s all.

Notes:

  • The custom section is for setting the custom color or choosing one of the custom colors.
  • If you want to remove the color from the cell(s), you must select them, hit the Fill color icon, and click on Reset.

Android

Here are the steps:

Launch the Google Sheets app.

Open the spreadsheet you want.

Select the cell(s) for which you would like to change the background color.

You will see the Fill color icon at the bottom. Hit it.

You are in the Basic tab now. The Custom tab contains custom colors.

Choose the color you prefer and choose the shade you like.

That’s it.

To clear the background color from the cells, select them, hit the Fill color icon, and tap Reset.

iPhone

Here are the steps:

Launch the Google Sheets app.

Open the spreadsheet you want.

Select the cell(s) for which you would like to change the background color.

Hit the Fill color icon at the bottom.

Now, select the color you prefer and hit the shade you want.

To remove the background color from the cells, select them, hit the Fill color icon, and tap the Reset.
