How to Enable or Disable Compact View in Windows 11

Written by Thirumalraj

Windows 11 File Explorer has space between the items. If you want to decrease the space, activate the compact view.

Choose one of the following three ways to complete this task. Let’s start.

Method #1

Remember that the below steps can enable or disable compact view.

Open File Explorer by pressing Windows + E. Hit the View in the command bar at the top.

Select Compact view. Remember that a checkmark in this option means it is enabled.

Method #2

Here are the steps to enable the compact view:

Open the Run by pressing Windows + R. Type control folders and press the Enter key. You can now see the File Explorer Options.

Navigate to the View tab.

Locate and select the option “Decrease space between items (compact view).” You can find this one between “Always show menus” and the “Display file icon on thumbnails.”

Click the OK button.

That’s all.

Note: If you don’t want the compact view, follow the above steps but remove the selection from the above option.

Method #3

Open the Registry Editor. Follow these steps to complete this task: Press Windows + R to open Run. Type regedit, then press Enter key. Click Yes in the popup.

I suggest you make a backup of the Registry before proceeding.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > Advanced.

Double-click on the DWORD UseCompactMode in the right pane.

Enter 1 in the Value data field, and then click OK.

That’s all.

Note: To disable compact view, follow the above instructions and replace 1 with 0.
