How to Create, Open and Extract a ZIP File in Windows 10

You can create a ZIP file in three different ways. You can choose the one you prefer. Let’s find out what they are.

Method #1

Select the items you want in the ZIP file. Right-click it.

Hover the mouse over “Send to.”

The “Compressed (zipped) folder” option is visible. Click on it.

A new ZIP file appears that asks you to confirm or change the suggested file name.

Press “Enter” if you wish to keep the suggested file name. If not, enter a new name and then press “Enter.”

That’s all. You have successfully created a ZIP file.

Method #2

Select the items.

Click on the “Share” tab in the File Explorer ribbon.

You can see the “Zip” option. Click on it.

A new ZIP file will appear asking you to change or confirm the suggested file name.

Press “Enter” to use the suggested file name. Otherwise, type in a new name and then press “Enter.”

Method #3

Right-click on the blank space where the items you wish to include in the ZIP file exist.

Hover your mouse over “New.”

Click on “Compressed (zipped) Folder.”

A new ZIP file appears that asks you to confirm or change the suggested file name.

You can keep the suggested file name if you press the Enter  key. Alternatively, you may provide a new name and press “Enter.”

Select the items you want to include in the ZIP file.

Drag and drop all those into the ZIP file you’ve created.

Please note: Content(s) can be added to a ZIP file at any time. To do this, drag and drop the content(s) into the ZIP file, and then you’re done.

Locate the ZIP file. Double-click on it. You can see the content(s) of the ZIP file.

How to Unzip a ZIP File in Windows 10

You can unzip the entire ZIP file or its content selectively. Let’s find out how to do both tasks.

Unzip Selective Content from a Zip File

Locate the ZIP file and then open it.

Select the content(s).

Right-click it and choose “Cut” or “Copy.”

Go to the location you want. Paste the content(s) there.

Unzip Entire Zip File

There are two ways to unzip the ZIP file. Here they are:

Method #1

Locate and right-click the ZIP file.

Select the “Extract All” option.

In the pop-up window, select the location where you want to unzip.

Unselect “Show extracted files when complete” if you don’t want to see the content(s) of the ZIP file after unzipping.

Click on the “Extract” button.

Method #2

Locate and select the ZIP file.

Click on the “Compressed Folder Tools” tab in the ribbon.

Click on the “Extract all” option.

You can see the pop-up where you can choose where you want to unzip and after unzipping you want the content(s) of the ZIP file to be shown or not.

Click the “Extract” button.

Note: You can delete the ZIP file after unzipping it if you wish.
