How to Delete Icon and Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10

Windows 10 caches icons and thumbnails to load them faster. If they don’t appear as expected, it may be because the cache is corrupted.

In this case, you will need to clear the cache. Once you delete the cache, Windows 10 will rebuild it.

Let’s see how to clear the icon cache:

Close all running applications.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Now you have to change the path. Enter this command:

cd c:\users\yourusername\appdata\local

Replace yourusername with your user name in the command and then press Enter.

Enter this command: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

Press Enter. You will see a blank screen temporarily. Follow the steps below:

Enter this command: delete iconcache.db and then press the Enter key.

Enter this command:

cd c:\users\yourusername\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\explorer

In the command, replace yourusername with your user name, then press Enter.

Remember that the location in the command is where the icon cache and thumbnail cache are located.

Enter this command: del iconcache* and then press the Enter key.

Now enter this command: dir iconcache* and then press the Enter key.

Note: If there are iconcache files, that means one or more apps may still be running. Close them and follow the above steps again.

Enter this command: explorer.exe and then press the Enter key.

That’s it. Restart your PC.

Clear the thumbnail cache using any of the following methods:

Method #1

Open the Start menu.

Enter disk cleanup. You can now see the Disk Cleanup app. Click on it.

Then select Thumbnails and deselect everything else.

Press the OK button.

Click the Delete Files button in the pop-up.

Method #2

Close all running apps.

Open Command Prompt as an admin.

Enter this command: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

Press Enter. You will see a blank screen temporarily. Follow the steps below.

cd c:\users\yourusername\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\explorer

In the command, replace yourusername with your user name, then press Enter.

Type this command: del thumbcache* and then press the Enter key.
