How to Disable WhatsApp without Deleting It

Uninstalling WhatsApp from your device is like disabling it; you can reinstall it when you want.

And note that you can also disable WhatsApp without uninstalling it; in this post, you’ll see how.

I use Google Pixel 4a (Android 12) and iPhone X. Let’s start.

Disable WhatsApp without Deleting It

Pick any of the below methods.

Method #1 (Android only)

Force stop the WhatsApp app on your Android device, and here’s how:

Open the Settings app and hit Apps.

Select See all X apps. X is a number.

Find and hit WhatsApp. Tap the Force stop option.

Hit OK in the confirmation popup.

That’s it.

Remember that whenever you want WhatsApp, all you need to do is open it.

Method #2 (Android only)

Note: I suggest a backup before proceeding with this.

Log out of WhatsApp Messenger by clearing its data. Here’s how:

Open the Settings app and hit Apps.

Select “See all X apps.” X is a number.

Find WhatsApp and hit it. You’re in the App info screen of WhatsApp now.

Select “Storage & cache.” You can see this button:

Clear Storage: Hit this one to clear the data of WhatsApp. In the confirmation popup, you can see this message:

Delete app data?

This app’s data will be permanently deleted. This includes files, settings, databases, and other app data.

Hit the “OK” option, and that’s all.

Open the app and go through the verification process when you want WhatsApp.

Method #3

Here’s what you need to do on your iPhone:

Open the Settings app and hit WhatsApp.

Hit Notifications and turn off Allow Notifications.

That’s all.

Note: Remember that the above steps only work for the messages. You still get notified whenever you receive a WhatsApp call (voice or video).

When you want to use the WhatsApp app, turn on Allow Notifications.

If you’re using an Android phone, follow these steps:

Turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls, and here’s how:

Open the WhatsApp Messenger app and hit the three vertical dots at the top right corner.

Select Settings > Notifications.

In the Calls section, hit Vibrate and select Off.

That’s all.

After that, do these steps:

Open the Settings app and hit Apps.

Select “See all X apps.” X is a number.

Find WhatsApp and hit it. You’re in the App info screen of WhatsApp now.

Tap Notifications and turn off All WhatsApp notifications.

That’s it.

When you want to use WhatsApp, turn on all the WhatsApp notifications by enabling “All WhatsApp notifications” and allowing the vibration for WhatsApp calls.

That’s all.
