How to Exit and Delete WhatsApp Group

By default, you can’t delete a WhatsApp group chat without exiting the group.

So, you must leave the group first, and only you can remove its chat. In this post, you’ll see the steps to do both.

Keep in mind – Removing the group chat from the Chats tab is not the same as deleting the group.

You can’t delete a group without exiting or being an admin. Also, note that the deletion is permanent.

Here are the steps you need to take to delete a WhatsApp group:

  • Remove all members of the group. Check out this guide, where I’ve discussed how to do this. Note that no participants can send a message to the group after they’re removed from the group.
  • Exit from the group.
  • Delete the group chat. This is for removing the conversation from the Chats tab, which is optional. Remember that you can only delete your group chat and cannot remove it for everyone.

That’s all.

Let’s see how to exit the group silently and delete its chat. I use an Android phone, iPhone, Web, and Desktop app. Let’s begin.

Exit WhatsApp Group and Delete Its Chat

Notes: When you exit a group on WhatsApp, the admins are notified about it, and no other members are notified.

Android

Open the WhatsApp app on your Android device. Press the group chat you prefer to select.

Tap the three vertical dots at the upper right corner. You can see the “Exit group” option above “Add chat shortcut.”

  • Save

Tap on it, and in the popup, you will see this message:

Exit “(group name)” group?

And these options: Archive Instead (which is for archiving this chat), Cancel, and Exit.

You need to tap the latter, and that’s it.

You exited the group and can now remove the chat from that “Chats” tab.

Press the chat and tap the “Trash can” icon between “Pin” and “Mute.”

In the popup, you can see this option: Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery.

Deselect this one if you want to keep the media. Tap the “Delete Group,” and that’s all.

Here’s an alternate method: Open the group and tap on the group name at the top. Scroll down until you see the “Exit group” option. Tap on it.

Now you can see the “Delete group” option, which you can use to remove the chat from the “Chats” tab.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp Messenger on your iPhone and ensure you’re in the “Chats” tab.

Press the group conversation, and you can view the “Exit Group” option.

  • Save

Tap on that, and you can see “Exit Group” and “Archive Instead” (which is for archiving conversation).

Hit the former, and that’s it.

Here are the steps to delete a group chat on WhatsApp: Press the conversation and tap “Delete Group.”

In the popup, tap “Delete Group,” and that’s all.

Here’s an alternate method to exit the WhatsApp group and remove its chat:

Open the group conversation and hit its name at the top. At the bottom, you can find the “Exit Group.” Tap it and hit “Exit Group” in the popup.

You can see the “Delete Group” option now, which you can use to delete the group chat.

Web

Open the Web and right-click on the group chat on the left sidebar. You can find the “Exit group” option between “Mute Notifications” and “Pin chat.”

Click on it and hit the “Exit Group” in the popup.

Right-click on the same conversation and select “Delete group.” In the popup, hit “Continue” and click on “Delete Group.”

Desktop

Open the Desktop app and right-click the group conversation you like on the left sidebar.

You can view the “Exit group” option. Click on it and hit “Exit” in the popup.

You can delete the group chat in WhatsApp Desktop by right-clicking on the conversation and selecting “Delete” in the popup.

You can see this message in the popup: Clearing or deleting entire chats will only remove messages from your devices on the newer versions of WhatsApp.

Hit the “Delete” button.
