How to Activate Filter Keys in Windows 10

What is Filter Keys?

This accessibility feature allows you to change keyboard repeat rates and ignore brief or repeated keystrokes.

To activate it, follow these steps:

Access Settings by pressing Windows and I on your keyboard.

Click on the Ease of Access > Keyboard.

Activate the switch under the Use Filter Keys section.

That’s all.

Here are the alternatives.

Keyboard Shortcut

Hold the right shift key for eight seconds.

The Filter Keys pop-up will appear.

Press the Yes button on it.

Control Panel

Start Control Panel.

Hit the Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use.

Activate the Turn on Filter Keys.

Press the OK button.

How to Disable Filter Keys

Open the Settings app (Keyboard shortcut: Windows and I).

Click on the Ease of Access > Keyboard.

In the Use Filter Keys section, you will see a switch. Disable it.

Alternative Method

Start Control Panel.

Hit the Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use.

Deactivate Turn on Filter Keys.

Press the OK button.

Additional Notes

The following options appear after you activate the filter keys in the Settings app:

  • Show the Filter Keys icon on the taskbar
  • Beep when keys are pressed or accepted

Both options are self-explanatory, aren’t they?

  • Turn on Bounce Keys to wait before accepting additional keystrokes when you press the same key more than once – Ignore the double hit of the same key or other similar errors for a while.
  • Turn on Slow Keys to make your PC wait before accepting keystrokes – Ignore keys that are not pressed for a certain period.
  • Turn on Repeat Keys to delay repeated keystrokes when you press and hold down on a key – In most keyboards, holding down a key means repeated keystrokes of that key. This option allows you to ignore repeated keystrokes for a certain time.

Remember that if you enable any of these, you can change the period for it.

Note:

You can disable repeated keystrokes as follows:

Go to “Make the keyboard easier to use” using the steps in the above section.

Hit Set up Filter Keys.

Enable Turn on Repeat Keys and Slow Keys.

Hit Set up Repeat Keys and Slow Keys.

Make sure “Ignore all repeated keystrokes” is selected.

Press the OK button below.

How to Turn Off Filter Keys Pop-Up

If you hold the right shift key for eight seconds, the Filter Keys pop-up will appear, allowing you to activate filter keys.

If you do not want this pop-up, here’s how to turn it off:

Click on the Ease of Access > Keyboard.

Find and deactivate “Allow the shortcut key to start Filter Keys.”

Note: If you want the pop-up, follow the steps above but enable it.
