Fix WhatsApp Contacts Not Showing (iPhone and Android)

Written by Thirumalraj

Is your newly added WhatsApp contact not showing up in the WhatsApp app?

Do you see phone numbers on WhatsApp instead of contacts?

Let’s see the solutions to fix these issues. I use Google Pixel 4a (Android 12) and iPhone X.

Fix WhatsApp Contacts Not Showing Issue

Solution 1

Make sure WhatsApp has the Contacts permission.

Here’s how you can do it on Android:

Open the Settings app and select Apps.

Hit See all X apps (X is number) and tap WhatsApp.

Select Permissions and ensure that the “Contacts” is under the “Allowed” section.

You can find it under the Not allowed section if you can’t find it there. Hit the Contacts and select Allow.

That’s all.

Here’s how you can do it on an iPhone:

Open the Settings app and select WhatsApp. Make sure that the “Contacts” option is enabled.

Solution 2

Try this solution if your newly added contact doesn’t appear on your contact list.

Here’s how you can refresh the list on your Android device:

Hit the green icon at the bottom right of the Chats tab.

Hit the three vertical dots at the top right and select Refresh.

That’s it.

Ensure that the Background App Refresh is enabled if you’re on an iPhone.

Here’s how:

Open the Settings app and hit WhatsApp. Enable the Background App Refresh option. If it is already enabled, leave it intact.

Solution 3

Make sure the WhatsApp app on your device is the latest version.

If that’s not the case, update it.

Solution 4

Suppose the newly added contact is international. You must ensure that you have correctly inputted the country code and number.

Solution 5 (Android only)

Here are the steps:

Open the Settings app on your Android phone.

Hit Passwords & accounts.

Tap WhatsApp and hit Account sync.

Make sure the “Contacts” option is enabled.

That’s all.
