How to Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, and Underline in WhatsApp
WhatsApp offers the option of bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace. In this post, you’ll see the steps to use these options.
Note that WhatsApp doesn’t offer the option to underline. But you’ll see the steps to underline in WhatsApp here. Note that this one applies only to Android devices.
Here I’ve also talked about changing the font color and size and using other font styles. Let’s begin.
Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, and Monospace Text in WhatsApp
You can apply over one format (except monospace) to the text. For example, you can use bold and italics for the same text.
Also note that when you apply a specific option, you can see the formatting in the text. Don’t worry about the special characters around the text. They won’t be there in the message when you sent it.
iPhone
Open the WhatsApp app. Ensure you’re in the “Chats” tab and hit the group or contact conversation.
Type the text in the compose box at the bottom. Select the text you want to format.
You’ll see the “Format” option.

Tap it, and you can see the “Bold” and “Italic” options. Hit the “Arrow” icon to see the “Strikethrough” and “Monospace” options.

Select the one you want.
You can also do this task in another way. Please refer below section (Web or Desktop) for that.
Android
Open the WhatsApp app and hit the chat you prefer. Type the text and select the text you want to format.
“Bold” to make your text bold, and “Italic” to make your text italic.

Hit the three vertical dots in the pop-up. You can find the “Strikethrough” and “Monospace.” The former is for strikethrough, and the latter option is for monospace.
Tap the one you like.
Please refer below for an alternate method to do the above.
Web or Desktop
You can follow the below steps to format the text on WhatsApp Web or the Desktop app. Keep in mind that this method applies to the iPhone and Android too.
Here are the steps:
- To make the text bold, type the words between two asterisks (For instance: *Hi*).
- To make the text italic, type the text between two underscores (Example: _Hi_).
- To make the strikethrough text, type the words between two tildes (Example: ~Hi~).
- To make text monospace, type the words between the three backticks.
That’s it.
Here’s an alternate method for Desktop app users:
After typing the text on the chat’s compose box on the WhatsApp Desktop app, select it. You can now see four options. From the left, the first one is for bold. The second, third and fourth are for italics, strikethrough, and monospace, respectively.
Change Font Size in WhatsApp
Note that WhatsApp doesn’t have the option to change the font and the font size change only applies to you.
Web or Desktop
On the Desktop app, you can enlarge or reduce the font size by changing the text size of the PC.
On the Web, you can change the font size by using the “Zoom” option in the browser. I’m using the “Chrome” browser here.
Press the “Ctrl” key and scroll the mouse wheel down to have a bigger font size. Press the “Ctrl” key and scroll the mouse wheel up to have a smaller font size.
Here’s an alternate method: Open WhatsApp Web. Now click the three vertical dots at the top right of the “Chrome” browser.
Besides “Zoom,” you can see “+” and “-.” The former increases the font size, and the latter decreases it. Use the one you prefer.
iPhone
WhatsApp for iPhone cannot change the font size like WhatsApp for Android. But you can change the WhatsApp font size by changing the text size of the iPhone.
Here’s how:
Open the “Settings” app and tap “Display & Brightness.” Find and hit “Text Size.”
Now you can see a slider at the bottom. Slide it to the left decreases the text size, and sliding it to the right increase the text size.
Use it and open the WhatsApp app to see the change.
Android
Launch WhatsApp and tap the three vertical dots at the top right. Select Settings > Chats.
Select “Font size” between “Media visibility” and “Keep chats archived.”
You’ll see these three options in the pop-up – Small, Medium, and Large.

Choose the one you want.
Underline in WhatsApp (Android)
Install and open the Blue Words app. Once on the main screen, find and hit “Underlined words.”
In the “Type here,” type your WhatsApp message.
You can see the preview at the top. Hit the “Copy” icon beside the preview to copy the underlined message.

Now open the WhatsApp app and tap the chat (group or contact) you prefer.
Long press in the compose box at the bottom and hit the “Paste” option.
Hit the “Send” button, and that’s it.
Note:
If you wish, you can follow these steps after typing your message in the app as said in the above steps.
Hit the “Share” icon at the bottom right. In the pop-up, you can view “Share with WhatsApp” at the top. Hit “Just once.”
Choose the WhatsApp chat you prefer. Hit the “Arrow” icon at the bottom right.
Now you can see the underlined message in the compose box of your chosen conversation. Tap the “Send” icon, and that’s it.
