How to Turn On or Off Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets Dark Mode

Let’s see the steps to complete this task and view the document or spreadsheet in light theme.

In this instance, I’m using Google Pixel 4a (Android 12) and iPhone (iOS 15.3).

How to Turn On or Off Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets Dark Mode

Here are the steps:

Open the Google Slides, Google Docs, or Google Sheets app.

Hit the three horizontal lines at the top left.

Select Settings.

Hit the “Theme” if you’re on an iPhone. If you’re using Android, hit Choose theme.

Now you can see these three options: Light, Dark, and System Default.

The first one disables the dark theme, the second one enables the dark theme, and the third one applies the dark mode state of your phone to the Google Docs app.

Please select the one you prefer, and that’s it.

Notes:

The desktop version of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides doesn’t have the option to activate the dark mode.

However, you can get it by following the steps below. I’m using the Chrome browser on Windows 11 PC here.

In the Chrome address bar, type chrome://flags and press the Enter key.

In the search box at the top, type dark. You can now see this flag: Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.

Open the drop-down list of it and select Enabled.

Hit Relaunch to restart the browser.

That’s it. Visit Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, and you can see the changes.

But the vital thing to note here is that this change is not applied only to Docs, Sheets, or slides but to every site.

All you need to do is open the above-mentioned drop-down list and select Default to revert this change. Hit the Relaunch button, and that’s all.

You can see the spreadsheet in the light theme when the Google Sheets app is in dark mode.

Let’s see how.

Open the Google Docs or Google Sheets app and open the document or spreadsheet you prefer.

Hit the three vertical dots (if you’re using Android) or three horizontal dots (if you’re on iPhone) at the top right.

Select View in light theme if you’re on Android.

If you’re on an iPhone, enable View in light theme.

That’s it.

Hit the three vertical or horizontal dots at the top-right if you want to go back to the dark theme. Select the “View in dark theme” option if you’re on Android. If you’re using an iPhone, disable the “View in light theme.”
