If you’re using the Web, click on “Archive chat.” On the Desktop app, click on “Archive.”

Let’s see the steps to unarchive and archive all WhatsApp chats on the Desktop. Let’s begin with the latter.

Open the WhatsApp Desktop and hit the “Gear” icon on the bottom left.

In the popup, select “Chats.” Hit the “Archive all chats” button, hit “Yes,” and that’s it.

To unarchive, follow the steps above, and you can see the “Unarchive all chats” button. Remember that you can only see this button when all the chats are archived.

Click on it and hit “Yes.”

Remove WhatsApp Archived Box from the Top

By default, when you archive chats, WhatsApp will move them to the “Archived” folder with their notifications turned off. Even if you receive new messages or send messages from an archived conversation, it’ll remain there unless you unarchive it.

You’ll receive a notification if you’re mentioned or quoted in a group chat, which is archived. But the conversation will remain in the “Archived” folder.

Besides the “Archived” box, you can see a number representing the total number of archived conversations with unread messages.

If you follow the below steps, the following will happen:

  • On Android, you move that box to the bottom of the chats in the “Chats” tab. On iPhone, WhatsApp will remove the box.
  • Archived conversations get unarchived automatically if you send a message from them or if they receive a message.
  • On Android, you can see a number beside the “Archived” box, representing the number of archived conversations.

Let’s see the steps. Note that you can’t do this task on the Web and Desktop.

Android

Go to WhatsApp Settings and hit “Chats.” Turn off “Keep chats archived” between “Font size” and “Chat backup.”

To revert, turn it on.

iPhone

In WhatsApp Settings, tap “Chats.” You can find “Keep Chats Archived” between “Export Chat” and “Move Chats to Android.” Switch it off.

To revert, turn it on.
