How to Enable IE mode in Edge

What is IE Mode?

While using the Microsoft Edge browser, you can use Internet Explorer (IE) mode if you run into compatibility issues with an old website.

Consider using Edge to view a page that does not work with it, but works with Internet Explorer. Instead of using Internet Explorer, you can open the website in Edge IE mode.

Let’s see how to enable it.

Open Edge.

Hit the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner.

Click Settings.

On the left sidebar, click Default browser.

Note: You can go directly to the “Default Browser” by pasting (edge://settings/defaultbrowser) into the address bar and pressing Enter.

In the Internet Explorer compatibility section, see “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode.”

Activate it and press the Restart button.

That’s all there is to it. IE mode has been activated.

Let’s see how to use it.

Visit the website you want.

Hit the three horizontal dots at the top right.

Move the mouse over the More tools menu.

Click Reload in Internet Explorer mode.

That’s all. The page will now be reloaded in IE mode.

The IE icon appears in the address bar when in Internet Explorer mode.

You can leave IE mode by pressing the Leave button at the top.

Notes:

Some websites do not support IE mode. For example, YouTube.

In the “Internet Explorer compatibility” section, you will see a drop-down list next to Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge.

You can configure what you want to open in IE mode here.

Open the drop-down list and you will find these options:

  • Never – this will open all websites that support IE mode in IE mode.
  • Incompatible sites only (Recommended) – this will only open incompatible pages of IE mode in Edge.
  • Always – this does not open the page in Internet Explorer mode.

Alternate Method

Launch local group policy editor.

Navigate to the Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.

Then double-click “Configure Internet Explorer integration” in the right pane.

Select Enabled.

From the drop-down list, select Internet Explorer mode.

Hit the OK button.

Navigate to the Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer.

Then double-click “Use the Enterprise Mode IE website list” in the right pane.

Select Enabled.

Provide the URL of your Enterprise Mode IE website list.

Hit the OK button.

That’s all.
