In this post, you’ll see how to mark a WhatsApp chat (contact or group) as read or unread.
I use the app (iPhone and Android), Desktop, and Web. Let’s start.
What is Mark as Unread in WhatsApp?
Note: You can’t mark a WhatsApp message as unread, and you can only make a chat unread.
You can use the “mark as unread” option if you wish to return to chat later.
Remember that this feature has nothing to do with the read receipts, also known as “blue ticks.” When you use it, you’ll see a blank circle in that chat, which is a reminder.
What is Mark as Read in WhatsApp?
The “Mark as read” option marks all messages in chat as read, and the sender will see “blue ticks” on their side.
Use it to make a conversation read or message read without opening the WhatsApp app (applies for Android only).

Here are the steps:

- Select the conversations you want to mark as unread.
- Hit the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the app.

Note: You can only see the above option if the selected conversations have no unread Whatsapp messages.

Otherwise, WhatsApp will mark the chat as unread.
Swipe the chat you want to mark as read or unread to the right.
You can view “Unread” (if that chat has no unread message) or “Read” (if that conversation has any unread messages or was marked as unread). Tap it.
Long press the chat you like.
You can view “Mark as Unread” if that chat has no unread messages. Or “Mark as Read” if it has any unread messages or was marked as unread. Tap it.
Mark Contact or Group Chat as Read or Unread on WhatsApp Web or Desktop
Open the WhatsApp Desktop or Web.
On the left sidebar, right-click your preferred chat or hover the mouse over it and hit the down arrow.
Under “Pin chat,” you can view “Mark as read” or “Mark as unread.” Select it, and that’s all.
Alternatively, if you’re on WhatsApp Web, you can do this task using this keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + U. If you’re on the Desktop app, press Ctrl + Shift + U.
