How to Mark as Unread on WhatsApp and Telegram

In this post, you’ll see the steps to mark a WhatsApp or Telegram conversation as read or unread.

WhatsApp’s unread filter lets you see only the chats with unread messages, and you’ll also see how to use this filter. Let’s start.

Mark as Unread in WhatsApp or Telegram

Let’s see what is mark as read or unread in WhatsApp or Telegram.

The “Mark as unread” option marks a chat you want to return later and has nothing to do with the read receipts. And when you use this option, you’ll see a dot on the chat, a reminder.

Note that you can’t mark a WhatsApp or Telegram message as unread, and you can only make a chat unread.

The “Mark as read” option marks all messages in chat as read, and the app will notify the sender that you read them.

Use it to make a conversation read or make a message read without opening the WhatsApp or Telegram app (applies for Android only).

Let’s see the steps to use these options and note that the steps below apply to both the private (or contact) and group chat.

iPhone

Open the Telegram or WhatsApp app and slide the chat to the right in the “Chats” tab.

You can see the option: “Unread” or “Read.”

You can view “Unread” (if that chat has no unread message) or “Read” (if that conversation has any unread messages or was marked as unread). Tap it.

Otherwise, Telegram or WhatsApp will mark the chat as unread.

Android

If you’re a Telegram user, follow these steps:

In the Telegram app, press your preferred chat and hit the three vertical dots at the top right corner.

Select the “Mark as unread” or “Mark as read” option.

You can see the former if the chat has no unread messages or is not marked as unread. Otherwise, you can see the latter.
