How to Mute or Unmute Chat on Telegram
In this post, you’ll see the steps to mute or unmute a Telegram chat (group or contact). Let’s begin.
Unmute Telegram Chat
Note: When the mute time expires, the chat gets unmuted automatically. This doesn’t apply if you’ve selected the “Mute Forever” option.
iPhone
To unmute the chat manually, open the conversation, tap the name on the top, and tap “Unmute.”

Here’s the alternate method: Long-press the muted chat or swipe it to the left and select “Unmute.”
Android
Open the Telegram app and the chat you like. Tap three vertical dots on the top right and “Unmute.”

The following method will allow you to unmute many chats at once: Select the conversation(s) you want to unmute and tap the “Volume” icon at the top.
Web
Please open the chat and click the three vertical dots at the top. Select “Unmute.”
Here’s an alternative method: Right-click on the conversation in the left sidebar and click “Unmute.”
Desktop
Right-click on the conversation you prefer and click on “Unmute.”
Alternate method: Click on your preferred chat and hit the three vertical dots at the top right. Select “Unmute.”
Mute Telegram Chat
Note that:
- No one knows when you mute someone or a Telegram group chat.
- Chat will remain muted even if you close and reopen Telegram.
- When you mute the conversation, a “Mute” symbol will appear on that conversation in the “Chats” tab.
Android
In the Telegram app, open the chat and tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner. Tap “Mute.”

The “Mute Forever” will permanently silence the chat.

For predefined durations, select “Mute for,” and you can see these durations – 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 8 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 5 months, 6 months, and 1 year.
Choose any of the above as per your preference.
That’s it.
Using this alternative method, you can mute multiple chats at once: Select the conversations and tap the “Mute” icon at the top.
An alternate method to mute a Telegram chat: Select the conversation. Tap the “Mute” icon at the top, and you can see a popup with durations.
The durations are Mute for 1 hour, Mute for 8 hours, Mute for 2 days, and Disable (this one will mute the conversation forever). Pick the one you like.
iPhone
In Telegram, open the conversation you want to silence. Tap the name on the top and select the “Mute” option.

The “Mute Forever” will permanently silence the chat.

For predefined or custom durations, select “Mute for,” and you can see these durations – Mute for 1 hour, Mute for 8 hours, Mute for 1 day, Mute for 7 days, and Mute until.
The latter will let you set a custom date and time. Choose any of the above as per your preference.
That’s it.
Remember that you can see the “Mute” icon in muted conversation.
Here’s an alternative method: Long press the chat or swipe it to the left and select “Mute.”
Web
Open the Telegram Web. Please open the chat and click the three vertical dots at the top.
Select “Mute.” These durations are available options – For 1 hour, For 4 hours, For 8 hours, For 1 day, For 3 days, and Forever. “Forever” mutes the chat permanently.
Select the one you want and click “Mute.”
That’s it.
Alternatively, right-click on the conversation in the left sidebar and click on “Mute.” Choose the duration and click “Mute.” Remember that “Forever” is for silencing the chat forever.

Desktop
In the Telegram Desktop app, right-click on the conversation you prefer. Hover your mouse over “Mute notifications.”
The “Mute Forever” will permanently silence the chat.
For predefined durations, select “Mute for,” and you can see these durations – 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months.
Select the one as per your preference and hit “Mute.”
You need to click on three vertical dots in the popup for the custom duration and select “Custom.” Set the days, hours, and minutes as per your preference. Hit “Mute.”
Here’s an alternate method to mute:
Click on your preferred chat and hit the three vertical dots.
Hover the mouse over the “Mute notifications.” You can see the “Mute for” and “Mute forever” above.
Choose the one as per your preference.
