How to Allow or Block Pop-ups on Microsoft Edge

Let’s see how to do this task on Windows 11 PC, Google Pixel 4a (Android 12), and iPhone (iOS 15.2).

How to Allow or Block Pop-ups on Microsoft Edge (PC)

Here are the steps:

Open Edge browser.

Click on the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner.

Hit on “Settings.”

Click “Cookies and site permissions” on the left sidebar.

Click on “Pop-ups and redirects.”

You can see a switch beside “Block (recommended).” Enable (to allow pop-ups) or disable (to block pop-ups) it.

That’s it.

Note:

You will see Allow and Block, where you can add sites.

Even if you allow pop-ups, Edge will block pop-ups for the sites you added to the Block list. Pop-ups will be allowed for the sites you add to the Allow list even when pop-ups are blocked.

To add a site, follow these steps:

Depending on your needs, click the Add button beside Block or Allow.

Hit the Add button after providing the URL of the site.

That’s it.

Each URL has three horizontal dots next to it. You will see these options when you click on them:

  • Allow (if it is the website for which you blocked pop-ups) or Block (if it is the website for which you allowed pop-ups) – If you hit the former, the website will be added to the Allow list. In the latter case, the website will be added to the Block list.
  • Edit – To edit the URL.
  • Remove – Remove the URL from the list.

Alternative Methods

Here are some alternate methods to allow or block pop-ups:

Method #1

Open local group policy editor.

Navigate to the Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Content settings.

Then double-click “Default pop-up window settings” in the right pane.

Select Enabled.

From the drop-down list, select any of the following you prefer:

  • Allow all sites to show pop-ups
  • Do not allow any site to show popups

The former is for allowing, while the latter is for blocking. Hit the OK button.

That’s all.

Note: For default, select Not Configured.

Method #2

To block it, follow these steps:

Launch Registry Editor. I suggest a Registry backup before proceeding.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Edge.

If you don’t see the Edge key mentioned above, you need to create it, and here’s how: Right-click on the Microsoft key and select New > Key. Type Edge and then press the Enter key.

Right-click on the blank space in the right pane.

Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Type DefaultPopupsSetting and then hit the Enter key.

Double-click it and then provide 2 in the Value data field.

Hit the OK button.

That’s it.

Note: To allow it, provide 1 in the Value data field of the DWORD. For the default, delete the DWORD you created earlier.
