“Emoji reactions” is a WhatsApp feature that lets you reply to a message using an emoji.
In this post, you’ll see that, along with the steps to disable reaction notifications.
I use Windows 11 PC, iPhone X, and Google Pixel 4a (Android 12).
React to WhatsApp Message with Emoji (Android or iPhone)
Here are the steps:
Open the WhatsApp Messenger app and hit the contact or group chat you like.
Long press message you want to react to.
You can now see these six emojis:
- Thumbs up
- Face with tears of joy
- Face with open mouth
- Crying face
- A person’s folded hands
Choose the one you like, and that’s all.
Follow these steps to change your reaction to the message: Long-press it and hit the emoji you want other than the selected one.
If you wish, you can remove your reaction from the message, and for that, long-press it and hit the emoji you’ve used.
The message’s author didn’t get notified regarding this. Here’s an alternate method to remove the reaction:
Hit the emoji reaction to the message. Find your reaction and tap it.
Here are some things to note:
- You can only use one emoji for a WhatsApp message. The same applies to the other side.
- A WhatsApp message of the contact chat can have two reactions: one from the sender and the other from the recipient.
- You can react to your message or the message of others.
- You can’t remove or change the reaction of others.
React to a Message with Emoji on WhatsApp Web or Desktop App
Here are the steps:
Open WhatsApp Web or Desktop app and open the chat.
Hover over the message, and you can see the emoji icon. Click it, and you can see emojis.
Please choose the one you like, and that’s it.
To change the reaction, follow the above steps and select the one you want other than the selected one.
Follow the steps above and click on the currently chosen to remove the reaction.
Here’s an alternate method to remove the reaction:
Hit the emoji reaction to the message. Find your reaction and click it.
Turn Off WhatsApp Reaction Notifications
Note: WhatsApp doesn’t offer this option for individual chats.
By default, when you react to a message using an emoji, WhatsApp will notify the message’s author.
If you don’t like it, you can turn off reaction notifications. Let’s see how.
If you’re using Android, follow these steps:
Hit the three vertical dots at the top right and select Settings.
Disable Reaction Notifications in the Messages section to turn off reaction notifications for contact chats.
To do the same for group chats, disable Reaction Notifications in the Groups section.
That’s it. You can revert anytime by turning on the above options.
Follow these steps if you’re on the iPhone:
Hit Settings at the bottom and select Notifications.
Disable Reaction Notifications in the Message Notifications section to turn off reaction notifications for contact chats.
To do the same for group chats, disable Reaction Notifications in Group Notifications.
That’s all. You can revert anytime by turning on the above options.
If you’re using WhatsApp Web or Desktop app, follow these steps to turn off reaction notifications for the entire WhatsApp:
Open the WhatsApp Web or Desktop app.
Hit the three vertical dots in the left sidebar if you’re on the Web. Else, click the three horizontal dots on the left sidebar.
Select Settings > Notifications.
Uncheck “Turn off all reactions notifications.”
That’s it. You can revert by checking the option mentioned above.
