How to Reduce WhatsApp Mobile Data Usage

Written by Thirumalraj

You can reduce WhatsApp data usage by following the steps in the post.

I use an iPhone X and Google Pixel 4a (Android 12). Let’s start.

Reduce WhatsApp Mobile Data Usage

You need to do three tasks to reduce the data usage of WhatsApp. Please see them below.

Enable the “Use less data for calls” option to save data on WhatsApp voice and video calls.

If you’re using Android, follow these steps to complete this task:

Open the WhatsApp messenger app and hit the three vertical dots right below.

Select Settings > Storage and data.

Turn on “Use less data for calls.” You can find this one beneath Network usage.

That’s it.

Follow these steps if you’re using an iPhone:

On WhatsApp, hit Settings at the bottom. Select Storage and Data.

Enable “Use Less Data for Calls,” which you can find in the Network section.

That’s all.

Disable automatic download of the media. Here’s how you can do this task on Android and iPhone. Let’s begin with the latter.

Open the WhatsApp Messenger app.

Select “Settings” at the bottom, then “Storage and Data.”

You’ll see these options in the “Media Auto-Download” section:

  • Photos
  • Audio
  • Video
  • Documents

Choose one of them, and you’ll view these three options:

  • Never – This disables auto-download of selected media. For example, if I choose “Never” for “Video,” WhatsApp will not auto-download the video.
  • Wi-Fi – This only downloads selected media on a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Wi-Fi and Cellular – This downloads selected media on Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Choose Wi-Fi or Never as per your preference.

You can follow the steps above for the other options in the “Media Auto-Download” section.

That’s all.

If you’re using an Android device, follow these steps:

Open the WhatsApp app.

Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.

Select Settings > Storage and data.

You’ll see three options in the “Media auto-download” section.

To turn off the auto-download of media on cellular data, select the “When using mobile data” option.

Deactivate all of them and tap “OK.”

That’s it.

Set WhatsApp not to back up while your device is on a cellular data connection.

That’s it.
