How to Disable Microsoft Edge Startup Boost

Written by Thirumalraj

Microsoft Edge has a feature called “startup boost.” Edge starts faster with this feature. It doesn’t matter where you start the browser; it opens quickly.

Here’s how it works:

If you enable this feature, Edge will add itself to the startup programs of your PC. In other words, as soon as you log in to your PC, Edge will also load in the background.

Even after Edge is closed, it’ll continue to run in the background.

Now let’s see how to enable the startup boost feature on Edge.

Open the Microsoft Edge browser.

Hit the three horizontal dots at the top right and click Settings.

Click “System and performance” on the left sidebar.

Note: You can get to the System and performance directly by entering edge://settings/system and pressing Enter.

On the right, you’ll see “Startup boost.” Activate it.

That’s all. You’ve enabled the startup boost.

Go to the Task Manager Startup tab and see Microsoft Edge.

Note: You can disable the startup boost by turning off the switch.

Here are the alternate methods:

How to Enable or Disable Startup Boost on Microsoft Edge using Registry Editor

If Microsoft Edge is already running, close it.

Open the Registry Editor. Before proceeding, I suggest that you back up the Registry.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft.

Hit Edge. If you can’t find it, create it. You can do this by right-clicking on Microsoft and choosing New > Key. Press the Enter key after entering Edge.

Right-click on the blank space in the right pane.

Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Then enter StartupBoostEnabled and press the Enter key. Double-click it.

Enter 0 (always disabled) in the Value data field or 1 (always enabled).

Hit the OK button.

That’s all.

Note: Removing the DWORD you created earlier will restore the default settings.

How to Turn On or Off Startup Boost on Edge using Local Group Policy Editor

To enable it, follow these steps:

Launch local group policy editor.

Navigate to the Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Performance.

Then double-click “Enable startup boost” in the right pane.

Select Enabled.

Hit the OK button.

That’s all.

Note: Follow the above steps but choose Disabled to disable startup boost.
