How to Enable or Disable Vertical Tabs on Edge

Here’s how to enable vertical tabs on Edge:

Open Edge browser.

Hit the Tab actions menu button at the top left.

If you can’t find it, then follow these steps to activate it:

Press the three horizontal points at the top, then Settings.

Hit Appearance in the left sidebar.

The Show tab actions menu is now displayed in the Customize toolbar section. Activate it.

Click the Tab actions menu button and select Turn on vertical tabs to enable vertical tabs.

You will see the open tabs on the sidebar on the left.

The active tab’s title appears in the browser window’s middle.

Each open tab displays its favicon and title in the sidebar. Each open tab has an X next to it to close it.

If you want, you can change the order of the tabs, and clicking on the tab will take you to it.

There is also the New tab, which opens a new tab as the name suggests.

To fold the sidebar, use the left arrow at the top of the sidebar. Now, you will only see the favicon of the open tabs and the + icon for adding a new tab on the left sidebar.

You can reverse it by moving your mouse over the sidebar, where you will see the pin icon. Click on it.

To turn off vertical tabs, click the “Turn off vertical tabs” after clicking the Tab actions menu button in the left sidebar.

Alternative methods for enabling and disabling vertical tabs are as follows:

Method #1

You will see the “Turn on vertical tabs” option when you right-click the tab. For enabling, click it.

Disabling vertical tabs is as simple as right-clicking the active tab’s title and hitting “Turn off vertical tabs.”

Method #2

On Edge, type in this URL and then hit Enter: edge://settings/appearance.

You can find Show vertical tabs for all current browser windows above the Show home button.

Turn on and Turn off buttons are next to it.

Vertical tabs can be turned on via the former and off via the latter. Click on your preferred one.

Method #3

To disable:

If Microsoft Edge is already running, close it.

Open the Registry Editor. Before proceeding, I suggest that you back up the Registry.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft.

Hit Edge. If you can’t find it, you will have to create it. You can do this by right-clicking on Microsoft and choosing New > Key. Press the Enter key after entering Edge.

Right-click on the blank space in the right pane.

Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Then enter VerticalTabsAllowed and press Enter. Double-click it.

In the Value data field, enter 0 (always disabled).

Hit the OK button.

That’s all.

Note: Removing the DWORD you created earlier will enable vertical tabs if enabled before being disabled. Otherwise, this will only bring back the Tab actions menu button.
