How to Change WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone
In this post, you’ll see the steps to change notification sound and ringtone.
Also, you’ll view the steps to disable vibration and other notification settings and how to reset the notification settings of WhatsApp.
The “Popup notification” is unavailable for my Android device. Check out this guide for turning off reaction notifications. Let’s start.
Disable Vibration and Change WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone
Android
- By default, your device vibrates when you receive a WhatsApp message or call.
- By default, WhatsApp sets the notification sound and ringtone on your Android device as notification sound and ringtone for all WhatsApp contacts and groups.
- WhatsApp has no option to customize the group ringtone, and it uses its default ringtone.
Let’s see how to disable vibration and change notification sound and ringtone for a single and all chat.
For Single Contact or group
Launch WhatsApp and open your preferred group or contact chat.
Tap the name on the top and then “Custom notifications.” Enable “Use custom notifications.”

In the “Message notifications” section, hit “Vibrate” and select “Off.” Tap “Notification tone.” Tap “Save” at the top right after picking the notification tone.
In the “Call notifications” section, tap “Ringtone.”

Select the ringtone and tap “Save.”
Select “Vibrate” in the “Call notifications” section to turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls. Choose “Off.”
Notes:
- Choosing “None” in the “My Sounds” in the above steps means disabling it.
- To turn off the custom notification sound, ringtone, and vibration setting, uncheck “Use custom notifications.”
For All Contacts and Groups
Tap the three vertical dots on top of WhatsApp. Select Settings > Notifications.
Tap “Notification tone” in the “Messages” section to set a notification tone for all contacts.

Select the notification tone, and tap “Save.”
To disable vibration for all contacts, tap “Vibrate” in the “Messages” section and select “Off” from the pop-up.
Tap “Notification tone” in the “Groups” section to set a notification tone for all groups. Select the notification tone, and tap “Save.”
If you want to turn off the vibration for all group chats, tap “Vibrate” in the “Groups” section and pick “Off.”
Tap “Ringtone” in the “Calls” section to set the ringtone for all contacts. Choose the ringtone and tap “Save.”
To turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls, choose the “Vibrate” option in the “Calls” section. Choose “Off.”
Notes:
- Choosing “None” in the “My Sounds” in the above steps means disabling it.
- To revert, follow the steps above. For notification sound and ringtone, select the notification sound and ringtone of your Android device. For vibration, choose “Default.”
iPhone
By default, the ringtone of your iPhone is the ringtone for all WhatsApp contacts and groups.
Remember that there is no option to change the ringtone on WhatsApp. However, you can change the contact’s ringtone on your iPhone, which will apply to WhatsApp for that contact only.
Let’s see the steps to change the alert tone for individual contact or group.
Open the WhatsApp app and hit the chat you like.
Hit the name at the top and select “Wallpaper & Sound” between “Mute” and “Save to Camera Roll.”
Hit “Alert tone” in the “Custom Tone” section.

Choose the one you prefer, and hit “Save” at the top right. Choose “None” to turn off the alert tone for the chat.
If you like to return to the default, follow the steps above but choose “Default (Note).”
If you want to change the sound for all the group or contact chats, follow these steps:
Hit “Settings” at the bottom of WhatsApp and select “Notifications.”
Tap “Sound” in the “Message Notifications” section to change the sound for all contact chats.

Tap “Sound” in the “Group Notifications” section if you do this for all group chats.
Pick the one you prefer, and hit “Save” at the top right. Select “None” if you want to disable the alert tone for the chat.
To return to the default, follow the steps above but pick “Note (Default).”
On WhatsApp for iPhone, you can disable vibration for in-app notifications. Let’s see that.
In WhatsApp, tap the “Settings” tab at the bottom. Hit Notifications > In-App Notifications.
Disable “Vibrate,” and that’s it. To revert, enable the “Vibrate.”
Desktop
In the WhatsApp Desktop app, you can change the notification sound for the group and contact conversations. Here’s how you can do that:
Open the Desktop app and hit the “Gear” icon in the bottom left.
Click “Notifications” in the pop-up.
To change the contact chats notification sound, open the “Message notifications” drop-down list and pick the one you like.
If you want to change the group conversations notification sound, open the “Group notifications” drop-down list and choose the one you desire.
Using the “Play” icon beside the drop-down lists, you can hear how the one you’ve chosen will sound.
To disable the notification sound, pick “None.” If you want the default one, choose “Default.”
Other WhatsApp Notification Settings
Android
By default, when you receive a new message, and your device is unlocked, you’ll see a notification at the top of the screen. You can stop that with the below steps.
WhatsApp sets a white light for messages received by contact and group chats by default. Note that not all phones support light.
If you are on the chat screen of WhatsApp for Android, you’ll hear a sound by default if you send or receive a message. You can turn off that if you don’t want with the below steps.
Here are the steps:
In WhatsApp Settings, tap “Notifications.”
At the top, you can view “Conversation tones.” Please turn it off.
For notifications, turn off the “Use high priority notifications” in the “Messages” section for contact chats. Turn off the same option for group chats in the “Groups” section.
For light, select “Light” in the “Messages” section for contact chats. Choose your desired color or “None” to disable the light. Select “Light” in the “Groups” section for group chats. Change or turn off the light as you wish.
To do the above for a contact or group chat, open the conversation and tap the name on the top. Select “Custom notifications.”
Select “Light” to change or disable the light. For notifications, turn off “Use high priority notifications.”
iPhone
In WhatsApp Settings, select “Notifications.” Check this guide for the “Show Preview” option.
Select “In-App Notifications.”
In the “Alert Style” section, you can choose the one (Banners, Alerts, and None (Choose if you don’t want this alert)) you prefer.
While you are on WhatsApp for iPhone, you’ll hear a sound by default if you send or receive a message. If you don’t want that, turn off “Sounds.”
Reset WhatsApp Notification Settings
Android
To reset a single chat’s notification settings, hit the name at the top of the conversation. Hit the three vertical dots at the top right and tap “Reset notification settings.”
Follow the steps below to reset all your WhatsApp notification settings:
In WhatsApp Settings, select “Notifications.” Hit the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
Tap “Reset notification settings” and hit “Reset.”
iPhone
Hit “Settings” at the bottom of WhatsApp. Select Notifications > Reset Notification Settings. In the pop-up, hit “Reset.”
