How to Change WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone

How to Disable Vibration on WhatsApp

Android

By default, your device vibrates when you receive a WhatsApp message or call. Let’s see how to disable vibration for a single and all chat.

How to Disable Vibration for Single Chat

Here are the steps:

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app.
  2. Tap the contact or group chat for which you want vibration turned off.
  3. Tap its name on the top. Select “Custom notifications” between “Mute notifications” and “Media visibility.”
  4. Hit “Use custom notifications.”
  5. Hit Vibrate in the “Message notifications” section and select “Off.”
  6. Select Vibrate in the “Call notifications” section to turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls. Choose “Off.”

Note: Tap “Use custom notifications” to revert.

How to Disable Vibration for All Contacts and Groups

​Open WhatsApp and tap the three vertical dots on the top right. Select Settings > Notifications.

To disable vibration for all contacts, tap “Vibrate” in the “Messages” section and select “Off” from the pop-up.

To turn off the vibration for all group chats, tap “Vibrate” in the “Groups” section and select “Off.”

To turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls, choose the “Vibrate” option in the “Calls” section. Select “Off.”

Note: Follow the above steps to revert. However, rather than selecting “Off,” choose “Default.”

iPhone

WhatsApp for iPhone provides the option to disable vibration for in-app notifications.

Let’s see how to do that.

Open the WhatsApp app and hit the Settings tab at the bottom.

Hit Notifications > In-App Notifications.

Disable Vibrate, and that’s it. To revert, enable the Vibrate.

How to Customize WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone

Android

By default, WhatsApp sets notification sound and ringtone on your Android device as notification sound and ringtone for all WhatsApp contacts and groups.

Let’s see how to customize them for a single contact, a single group, and all contacts and groups.

​For Single Contact

​Launch WhatsApp. Tap the “New chat” icon, and hit your desired contact.

Tap its name on the top and then “Custom notifications.” Select “Use custom notifications.”

In the “Message notifications” section, tap “Notification tone.” Tap “Save” at the top right after selecting the notification tone.

In the “Call notifications” section, tap “Ringtone.” Select ringtone and tap “Save.”

Notes:

  • Choosing “None” in the “My Sounds” in the above steps means disabling it.
  • To turn off the custom notification sound and ringtone, uncheck “Use custom notifications.”

For the Single Group

Open the WhatsApp group. Tap its name on the top.

Tap “Custom notifications,” then “Use custom notifications.”

Tap “Notification tone.” Choose the notification tone and tap “Save.”

Notes:

  • Choosing “None” in the “My Sounds” in the above steps means disabling it.
  • Uncheck “Use custom notifications” to disable the group’s custom notification sound.
  • WhatsApp has no option to customize the group ringtone, and it uses its default ringtone for the group.

For All Contacts and Groups

​Tap the three vertical dots on top of WhatsApp. Select Settings > Notifications.

Tap “Notification tone” in the “Messages” section to set a notification tone for all contacts. Select the notification tone, and tap “Save.”

Tap “Notification tone” in the “Groups” section to set a notification tone for all groups. Select the notification tone, and tap “Save.”

Tap “Ringtone” in the “Calls” section to set the ringtone for all contacts. Choose the ringtone and tap “Save.”

Notes:

  • Choosing “None” in the “My Sounds” in the above steps means disabling it.
  • To revert, follow the steps above. However, select the notification sound and ringtone of your Android device.
  • WhatsApp has no option to customize the group ringtone, and it uses its default ringtone for the group.

iPhone

By default, the ringtone of your iPhone is the ringtone for all WhatsApp contacts and groups.

Remember that there is no option to change the ringtone on WhatsApp. However, you can change the contact’s ringtone on your iPhone, which will apply on WhatsApp for that contact only.

Let’s see the steps to change the alert tone for individual contact or group.

Open the WhatsApp app and hit the chat you like.

Hit the name at the top and select Wallpaper & Sound, which you can find between Mute and Save to Camera Roll.

Hit Alert tone, which is in the Custom Tone section.

Choose the one you prefer, and hit Save at the top right. Choose None if you want to disable the alert tone for the chat.

That’s it.

If you want to change the sound for all the group or contact chats, follow these steps:

Hit Settings at the bottom and select Notifications.

Tap Sound in the Message Notifications section if you want to change the sound for all contact chats.

Tap Sound in the Group Notifications section if you do this for all group chats.

Choose the one you prefer, and hit Save at the top right. Choose None if you want to disable the alert tone for the chat.

That’s all.

How to Reset Notification Settings

Android

Follow the steps below to reset a single chat’s notification settings:

Open the conversation and hit the name at the top. Select Custom notifications.

Hit the three vertical dots at the top right. Select Reset notification settings.

That’s it.

Follow the steps below to reset all your WhatsApp notification settings:

Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner of WhatsApp.

Select Settings > Notifications. Hit the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

Tap “Reset notification settings.” You can see this message on the pop-up:

Reset all notification settings, including custom notification settings for your chats?

Tap Reset, and that’s all.

iPhone

Hit the Settings tab at the bottom of the app. Select Notifications > Reset Notification Settings.

In the pop-up, hit Reset, and that’s it.

Other Notification Settings

Android

Here are other settings you can configure if you wish.

WhatsApp sets a white light for messages received by contact and group chats by default. Remember that not all phones support light.

Follow these steps to change or disable the light:

Go to “Notifications” (steps are in this section top).

To change or disable it for contact chats, select “Light” in the Messages section. Choose your desired color or None to disable the light.

Select “Light” in the “Groups” section to change or disable it for group chats. The remaining steps are the same as above.

Note: Here’s how to do this task for a single contact or group chat: open the conversation and tap its name on the top. Select Custom notifications. Enable “Use custom notifications.” Select “Light.” Change or disable the light.

By default, when you receive a new message and the device is unlocked, you’ll see a notification at the top of the screen. Here’s how to stop that:

Go to “Notifications” (steps are in this section top). Turn off the “Use high priority notifications” in the “Messages” section for contact chats.

Turn off the same option for group chats in the “Groups” section.

Note: Here’s how to do this task for a single contact or group chat: open chat. Tap its name on the top. Select Custom notifications. Enable “Use custom notifications.” Turn off “Use high priority notifications.”

That’s it.

iPhone

Here are the other settings that you can configure if you wish:

Open WhatsApp and hit Settings at the bottom.

Select Notifications > In-App Notifications.

In the Alert Style section, you can choose the one you prefer—the options are Banners and Alerts. If you don’t want this alert at all, select None.

That’s it.
