How to Show or Hide WhatsApp Status for Specific Contacts

By default, all your contacts, who have added you as a contact, can see your WhatsApp status.

Let’s see the steps to show or hide your WhatsApp status for your specific contacts.

Here are the essential things to note before proceeding with the steps:

  • If a contact has turned off read receipts, you’ll not know whether that person has seen your status.
  • The below steps will only apply to your new status.

I use Google Pixel 4a (Android 12), and iPhone X. Let’s begin with the iPhone.

Hide or Show WhatsApp Status for Specific Contacts (iPhone)

Here are the steps:

Open the WhatsApp Messenger app.

Hit the Status tab at the bottom and select Privacy in the top left.

On the Status Privacy screen, under the Who Will See My Updates section, you will see these three options:

  • My Contacts – means that all your contacts can see your status updates.
  • My Contacts Except – means that all your contacts except the one you’ve chosen can see your status.
  • Only Share With – means that only the contacts you choose can view your status.

Choose any of the two last-mentioned options. I selected the latter.

Select the contacts you prefer and hit Done at the top right.

That’s all.

Here’s an alternate method to reach the Status Privacy screen:

On the WhatsApp app, hit Settings at the bottom.

Select Settings > Account > Privacy > Status.

Show or Hide WhatsApp Status for Specific Contacts (Android Phone)

Here are the steps:

Launch the WhatsApp app.

Hit the Status tab at the top and select the three vertical dots in the top right—hit the Status privacy.

On the Status privacy screen, under the Who can see my status updates section, you will see these three options:

  • My contacts – means that all your contacts can see your status updates.
  • My contacts except – means that all your contacts except the one you’ve chosen can see your status.
  • Only share with – means that only the contacts you choose can view your status.

Choose any of the two last-mentioned options. I picked the latter.

Select the contacts you prefer. Hit the icon at the top right to select all contacts. If you’ve already chosen all the contacts, pressing this icon will deselect them.

Hit the Tick icon in the bottom right.

Tap the Done button at the bottom.
